I’m a Christian, and I believe the Lord has gifted each one of us with special talents and gifts to help us fulfill the plans He has for our lives. He is a great coach and He cheers us on to fulfill our destiny.
Let me tell you the story of our little cat Rory. He has always had great courage, and he’s an inspiration to me.
Rory came to our house as a stray cat. My daughter’s friend, who was staying with us for a while, found him outside on her way to school. She began to play with him and talk to him as she walked along the way. Every morning and afternoon he seemed to be there, waiting for her on the sidewalk, to follow her. She became convinced he had no home, so one day she came to us and asked if we would consider taking him in. We often rescued animals, so she was pretty confident we’d say yes, and she was right, of course.
From the moment he came into the house, he did strange things. First of all, he went into stealth mode, crawling with his tummy flat to the floor, slinking around to determine where he was. He showed no fear of our dogs, and would often choose to be part of their pack. As I said, we often rescued animals, so at the time of his arrival we had several cats and dogs.
We decided to take our newest little ward to the vet. This is what we did with most of our new pets. We’d get them checked over and make arrangements for them to be spayed or neutered if that was necessary. The vet observed a few things. Rory was about four to six months old. She noted he was extremely undernourished, but that wasn’t a surprise. She also noted that he was not a she. (I didn’t tell you that he started out as Aurora, the ugliest female cat I’ve ever seen – probably because “she” was so skinny.) No problem. Quick name change, and Rory was born. The vet also confirmed what we had started to suspect: our little kitty was totally blind.
The Lord did a miracle and watched over Rory while he was outside until we found him. We have a Great God who watches over all of us and cares for His creation.
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. (Matthew 10:29, NIV)
Rory continues to inspire me. He has never recognized his disability. He continues to climb on high cupboards that I think he can’t get down from. Usually I’m wrong! He works out a way to get down by himself. Sometimes he will call out for assistance, but that is rare.
Of course, we all need to know that it’s never wrong to ask for help. God, for one, is always ready and waiting, willing to talk to us and help us out.
As I said, Rory is an inspiration to me. You see, I also have a disability – a health condition I am dealing with. I am encouraged, because God so evidently intervened and cared for Rory. I can trust that God is able to, and will, care for you and me as well. We, His children, are very important to Him. He knows everything about us. The Bible says:
And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. (Matthew 10:30 & 31, NIV)
I appreciate Rory’s zest for life and his determination to overcome any challenge in front of him. My goal is to emulate his attitude on my journey toward health and perhaps encourage others to do the same.
But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint. (Isaiah 40:31, NIV)
